Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
