The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
