Our Household Personal Video Game of the Year List for The Past Year
Alright, how did you experience the past year in your family? Was it all as good as you pretended on Facebook? Full of A-grades for the kids and riotous dress-up celebrations for the adults? Or was it a sea of disappointment with only rare entertaining flotsam? Could any part be genuine, or have we all become AI-generated AI slop beings with unrealistic teeth?
I have gathered the family for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the crucial thing in any given year: which video games we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Game Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In real life."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Game the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Title I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I present that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Debate between questionable alliances that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it burns like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
