Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
