US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA advised travelers in California to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.
