European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
